Overview

SellBuyMe is a free real estate marketplace app that lets people buy and sell homes directly, without agents, so they keep the money normally lost to commissions. It puts the tools and resources for buying or selling a home in one place, and it's currently live in Ohio, with a waitlist for other states.

The challenge

The traditional real estate model is built around agents and commissions, which adds thousands of dollars in cost and makes the process feel complicated. Without an agent, people also worry about the legal paperwork, photography, and title and closing. SellBuyMe needed to make direct buying and selling simple, trustworthy and free for users.

My approach

I built SellBuyMe in React Native as a single codebase for iOS and Android. Features are organized by module, each with a screen, styles, and a container for logic. Shared UI components and a service layer handle reuse and API calls. State is React Context (auth, user, listings, chat, filters, theme). There is no Redux. The app focuses on making the direct buy/sell process simple, with supporting services (photography, legal, title) available through local partners.

• Gives buyers and sellers a way to transact directly and avoid thousands of dollars in agent commissions.

Achievements

• Shipped a cross-platform real estate marketplace live on both the App Store and Google Play
• Launched in Ohio with a waitlist model for expansion to other states
• Delivered a free, commission-free alternative to the traditional agent-based home buying and selling process
• Gated chat sends on identity, account status, blocks, a removed listing, and a closed transaction

Features

• Buyer, seller, and buyer-and-seller roles, with a Buy/Sell mode on the dashboard header.
• Property feed in list and map views, with Typesense search and filters (price, beds, baths, square footage, lot size, year built, property type, features, HOA, recently listed, price reduced, seller concession).
• Multi-step listing creation: address with map pin, ownership, property details, photos and videos, documents, description, extra info, pricing, preview, showing availability, and a published confirmation.
• Listing details with a media slider, full-screen map, share, save, documents, make-offer, and schedule, reschedule, or cancel a tour.
• Seller actions on a listing: edit, remove, set showing availability, and host an open house.
• Buyer dashboard: saved properties, active offers, tours, messages preview, and a buyer journey.
• Seller dashboard: listings, offers, showings, listing performance (views, chats, favorites), documents, close-out, and a seller journey.
• Offer actions: make, counter, accept, decline, withdraw, and update.
• Inbox and chat with file attachments, block and unblock, and user reports.
• Notifications inbox and a push-notification preference.
• Account settings, profile edit, weekly availability, blocked users, reports, contact support, and policy screens.
• Stripe Identity verification.
